In memory of Tran Van Quang (1959-1999)

Van-Quang Tran, born on March 4, 1959, in Tuy Hoa City, Phu Yen, Vietnam, was an honest, kind and generous catholic young man. Towards his family, parish, and the society, he displayed a remarkable responsibility.
After graduating from University of Economics in 1982, Quang began working for the Institute of Agricultural Science for Southern of Vietnam, which has belonged to the Ministry of Agriculture. Two years later, he was appointed Chief Accountant of the Institute.
 
At work, Quang gained much love and respect from his colleagues for always sharing the gifts that he had received during various business trips. Therefore, to facilitate his promotion, the board of director suggested he’d become a member of the Communist Party of Vietnam. The only condition for Quang is to declare himself as an atheist in the enrollment paper. Still, he could continue practice the religion at home. However, Quang refused the offer by firmly stating: “Is someone who lies to get benefits for himself a truthful leader?”
 
Then, what will be will be. The Institute’s buildings needed an entire renewal and Quang was one of those who oversaw the project. He was ordered to exaggerate the investment in need. In an urgent meeting organized in Hanoi City, Quang was strongly against the command by not giving his required signature, which was entirely unreasonable based on his calculations. Back to his hotel, Quang was served a cup of hot chocolate which gave him an extreme fatigue afterwards. Later, having arrived in Saigon, he was transferred immediately to the hospital. Ten days later, on February 1, 1999, he passed away at the age of 39 due to poisoning.
 
Quang had died for not cooperating in “legalizing the steal,”  a method which the Communist Party in Vietnam has widely employed since their conquer in 1954.
 
Through his great self-sacrifice, Quang has become the pride of our family, especially, of his wife and his children. Based on our Catholic belief, we believe that he is enjoying the eternal happiness in Heaven.

Van-Quang Tran, né le 4 mars 1959 à la ville de Tuy Hoa, Phu Yen, Vietnam ; était un jeune homme catholique honnête, doux, et généreux.  Envers sa famille, sa paroisse, et la société, il démontre une responsabilité bien remarquable.
 
Après avoir gradué de l’Université d’Économie en 1982, Quang a commencé à travailler pour l’Institut des sciences agricoles au sud du Vietnam, qui appartenait au ministère de l’Agriculture.  Deux ans plus tard, il a été désigné au poste du Chef comptable de l’institut.
 
Au milieu du travail, Quang recevait autant d’amour et de respect de ses collègues vu qu’il leur partageait toujours les cadeaux reçus lors de ses voyages d’affaires. Afin de favoriser la promotion de Quang, la direction de l’institut lui a suggéré de s’ajouter au parti communiste du Vietnam. La seule condition est de rejeter sa foi chrétienne dans la demande de candidature.  Cependant, Quang a refusé cette occasion en déclarant fermement : « Est celui qui ment pour ses propres bienfaits un dirigeant fidèle ? » 
 
Alors, ce qui sera, sera.  Les bâtiments de l’institut avaient besoin d’une rénovation complète et Quang était l’un des responsables de ce projet. Il a reçu un commandement d’exagérer la somme requise à investir.  Lors d’une réunion urgente organisée à la capitale, Hanoi, Quang était fortement contre cet ordre qui, selon ses évaluations scientifiques, paraissait extrêmement déraisonnable; et il a refusé de fournir sa signature définitive de l’accord.  Revenu à l’hôtel, Quang a été servi une tasse de chocolat chaud qui, plus tard, lui a donné un coup fort de fatigue.  Dès son arrivée à Saigon, immédiatement, il a été transporté à l’hôpital.  Dix jours plus tard, le 1 février 1999, à l’âge de 39 ans, Quang a succombé à cause de l’empoisonnement.
 
Quang est mort, car il n’a pas collaboré à « légaliser des vols », une méthode souvent employée par le régime communiste du Vietnam depuis leur envahissement en 1954.
 
À travers son grand sacrifice, Quang est devenu la fierté de notre famille, en particulier, de sa femme et ses enfants.   En nous basant sur notre croyance catholique, nous croyons bien que Quang profite maintenant sa vie éternelle à côté de Dieu.
