I was born in Canada after my mother fled the dire reality of life in the People’s Republic of Poland under Martial law. I make this donation in honour of a family friend, who along with her family was forced to leave Poland in 1969 as a result of the anti-Semitic purge perpetrated by the Communist regime. Hers was a normal, productive and well-integrated Polish family that was constantly harassed, then stripped of their Polish citizenship against their will and expelled from Communist Poland for no reason other than their Jewish background. While Canada accepted them as refugees and they were able to begin their lives anew, she admits that the trauma caused by that expulsion remains with her to this day.
