In memory of DINH Dang Dinh

Teacher, environmental activist and blogger Dinh Dang Dinh was sentenced to six years’ imprisonment in August 2012 after a three-hour trial. A subsequent appeal hearing lasted only 45 minutes. He was charged with “conducting propaganda” against the state for initiating a petition against bauxite mining in the Central Highlands. The bauxite mining project had been awarded to Chinese firms which used obsolete technologies that polluted the waterways and threatened the environment where thousands of ethnic tribes people lived.
His wife reported that he was in poor health and had been beaten by prison officials. He was diagnosed with cancer while in prison but was denied timely medical care. The authorities only allowed Dinh Dang Dinh to be treated in hospital from January 2014, where he was kept under constant surveillance. Dinh Dang Dinh died of stomach cancer at his home in Dak Nong province in Viet Nam’s Central Highlands in April 2014, at age 50. Before his death, Dinh Dang Dinh called for international scrutiny into detention conditions in Vietnam's prisons and camps, characterized by torture and systematic denial of medical care.
