IN MEMORIAM OF COMMANDER NGỤY VĂN THÀ (1943-1974)
The young patriot Ngụy Văn Thà was born on January 16th 1943 in Trang Bang, Tây Ninh Province, from a rich landowner family. He attended primary and secondary school in Tây Ninh. When he reached senior high, his family moved to Sài Gòn. In 1962, he graduated from high school with a diploma, having passed the Baccalaureate exam.
In 1963, during the war, he voluntarily joined the Navy of the Republic of Vietnam. He attended the 12th division course at Nha Trang’s Naval Training Center. In March 1964, he graduated and became an ensign in the commanding unit.
After graduation, he apprenticed on the Landing Ship LST-1166/MSS-2 Washtenaw County of the U.S. Seventh Fleet. He was then transferred to the Battle Cruiser Ngô Quyền HQ-17 as Deputy Captain.
On the 19th of June 1966, Armed Force’s Day, he was promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade. In 1967, he was delegated the responsibility of Deputy Commander of Naval Unit 23 stationed in Vĩnh Long Province. On National Day, November 1st 1969, he was promoted to Naval Lieutenant and transferred to Coast Guard Ship HQ-604 with the rank of Captain. In April 1972, he was promoted to Lieutenant Commander, and took responsibility as head of the landing ship HQ-331. On the 16th of September 1973, he was transferred to Frigate Nhựt Tảo HQ-10 as the Captain of ship.
On the 18th of January 1974, Frigate Nhựt Tảo under his command, was patrolling Đà Nẵng’s seaways and was ordered to head to Paracel Islands, to aid Vietnam’s Navy there. At the time, one of the engines and nautical radar of HQ-10 had been out of order.
At 10:22 AM on the 19th of January 1974, the battle between the Republic of Vietnam’s Navy and China’s Navy occurred. Each side had four warships, the warships of the Republic of Vietnam’s Navy were bigger and had more weapons compared to the Chinese’s.
Two Chinese warships, 389 and 396 opened fire directly at Vietnam’s battle cruiser Lý Thường Kiệt HQ-16. HQ-10 immediately joined the fight and took aim at the Chinese warships. The commander tower of China’s 389 was hit and the engine room burst into flames, rending them inoperative. China’s 389 and 396 turned to HQ-10 and opened fire. HQ-10’s gun-tower and the commander tower were hit. The captain and the deputy captain Nguyễn Thành Trí was severely injured and HQ-10 was no longer operative.
Since the frigate was heavily damaged, he ordered sailors to abandon ship. He and a few gunners stayed on the frigate and continued to fire at the Chinese warships.
Both China’s 389 and 396 were damaged by HQ-10 firepower; 389 stranded on a coral beach; 396’s engine room was hit and burst into flames.
On the HQ-10, chief mechanic Lieutenant Junior Grade Huỳnh Duy Thạch and other mechanics were deceased. Frigate Nhựt Tảo sank to the bottom of the sea with its captain and some of its sailors at a location 2.5 nautical miles southern Hải Sâm Rock, at 2:52 PM on the 17th of January, 1974. All of 74 Naval Servicemen of the Republic of Vietnam’s Navy had heroically sacrificed their lives.
After his death, the government of the Republic of Vietnam granted him The Fifth Grade War Merit Cross with a branch of poplar posthumously, and promoted him to Commander.
The late Commander Ngụy Văn Thà sacrificed his life to fight against the Communist Chinese invaders. He was glorified as a national hero who died for his country.
After his death, his wife, Ms. Huỳnh Thị Sinh, remained faithful to him and continued to raise their children. Their three daughters have grown up to become decent people, even though they were treated unfairly by the “Winners.”
In memoriam of Commander Ngụy VănThà.
