In memory of John Shafer.
 
John Shafer, died in 1929 at the age of 9 months, in early December, 1929.  He was sick with measles while the family was in transit accommodation for migrants in Moscow.  It developed into pneumonia just before they departed to begin their journey to Germany and then on to Canada.  He died in the train two hours before they reached the border with Poland.  The authorities took the body and promised to bury him   In the weeks following my grandmother went into a depression and had to be hospitalized while they were waiting for the ship for the next stage in their journey.
